How to Embed Google Video

This is just a follow up post on embedding video. I decided to use Google Video this time.

Systm Episode 1

Steps for uploading video:
1. Download the Google Video Uploader here.
2. Upload your video to your Google account.
3. Allow Google to verify your video.

Steps for adding video to website:
1. Go to the page the video is on and click the "Put on Site" link
2. Copy the code to your website.

Using Google video is nice because it generates all the code you need for adding the video, it stores the video on their server so you don't have to, and it already has a huge database of video that you can add to your site for free.

How to Embed Quicktime Movies

All over the web I'm seeing more and more embedded video on websites. This is a really nice add-on that gives your site just a little more of the cool factor.

Steps:
1. Find a video. Any short quicktime movie will do. Remember, try to keep file size small.
2. Use this code on your website:

< src="sample.mov" width="320" height="256">< /embed>
(Remove the " " just before "embed" and before the "/embed" when copying and pasting.)

3. Replace "sample.mov" with your movie file (either absloute or relative URL)
4. Set height and width to desired values. (Add 16px to the height so that the play/pause controller will show up.)

That's It!

There are several varibles that can also be set such as autoplay and start time. Check out everything shown here and more at Apple's tutorial page.

Tunatic

Here's another music related post for ya. I just stumbled across a program called Tunatic. Tunatic analyzes the music playing through your sound card and returns the song name and artist to you. It doesn't matter if the sound is comming from iTunes or a microphone. It just works. Its a little creepy when it is able to correctly identify your music.

Tunatic does have a few bugs though. The main problem is it has a limited music database. By downloading a program called Tunalyzer, users can help increase the size of the database. So, if you are listening to a popular band such as Green Day, you should have few problems matching songs. However, if you are listening to a more obscure band, don't expect Tunatic to get it right everytime, if even at all.

Flock

There is a new browser in town and its called Flock. It's based on Firefox and has some pretty nifty features. I'm posting this right now using a built in blogging feature in flock. I wish Firefox had this feature. I'd be much more inclined to post if it were this quick. Enjoy!

What's the idea behind Flock?
We believe that it should be easy for everyone to contribute to and participate on the web. To that end, we've started with integrating tools that make it easier to blog, publish your photos and share and discover things that are interesting to you.

Who should use it?
Flock is currently available only as a developer preview. This means that you can try it out but that it's not quite ready to become your everyday browser.Expect a more stable, public beta by the end of the year. If you want to see what we're working on for that release, take a look at our public beta roadmap.

Ok, so where can I download Flock?
You can grab the latest release from our developer page or, if you're even more brave, help test hourly builds.

Update: After doing a little searching, I found an extension for Firefox which allows me to highlight text and choose to "blog this". It allows me to bypass the big, klunky blogger interface.

Get Music Recommendations

Do you find it hard to find new music artists to fit your taste? Well, now you can let Pandora do the searching for you. Just type in your favorite band or song and let Pandora tell you other artists that are similar. It uses its Music Genome Project Database of more than 10,000 artists. It even plays full length songs for you, not those little 30 sec clips.

This service is similar to Yahoo's Launchcast, however instead of one big radio station, you make separate playlists based on different generes, or tastes. Also Pandora works in Firefox, Launchcast does not.

My eyes have been opened and I have seen the Skype. Skype is a free program that a person can use to chat over the internet. You can use skype as a fully functional VOIP service, or just use a headset and talk over the computer.

I said Skype was free, and it is for the most part. To be able to use more advanced features you have to pay, but the basic chat service is free.

Skype is basically an instant messenger for voice. Most IM clients support voice, but the quality of Skype is great! Just download skype, create an account, and add friends. It's simple.

You need a mike to use skype for what its intended. Any computer mike will do, but for really good sound quality invest in a nice headset. I bought the Logitech Internet Chat Headset and I Love it. Its comfortable, sounds great and its reasonably priced.

One thing Skype leaves out of the free version is an answering machine. This can easily be fixed by downloading SAM. Sam is a free, fully functional answering machine program that everyone who uses Skype should have.

Skype works on Mac and PC so don't worry about not cross platform compatibility.

How to save almost any media file in Firefox

Don't you hate coming across a great video or audio file on the web, but you aren't given the option to download it. These embedded files can be tricky get, but Firefox has a feature built right in that makes it a breeze.

1. In Firefox, go to any website that has an embedded media file you want to download. (In our case a flash file .swf)
2. Right-click on the page and select "view page info".
3. Click on the Media Tab.
4. Scroll through the list until you find the file you want (it will probably be of type embedded.)
5. Then click the save as button and you got it. (To run a flash object, just open it in a web browser.)

Apple Releases Mulit-Function Mouse

Apple FINALLY gave in to the pressure to make a multi-function mouse. With the new "Mighty Mouse" you can right/left click, scroll 360 degrees, and program other buttons. Apple didn't sacrifice design for functionality, they accomplished both.

For $49 you can buy one of these new mice for OSX or XP. Yes, the mouse will work with Windows XP.

Wonder why I've been gone so long? I've been watching/listening to a bunch of tech programs that you can get free off the web.

Podcast
Podcasts are great because they are very portable. Just download 'em, sync your favorite mp3 player, and listen. Really, you can listen to them any way you want (computer, cd, etc.)

My favorite podcasts are TWiT (This Week in Tech) and Diggnation. TWiT is made up of the old TechTV crew like Leo Laporte, Kevin Rose, Patrick Norton, Robert Heron and others. If you want hardcore tech check out TWiT. Diggnation is a new podcast put out by Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht. They review the most dug stories from Digg.com and throw in some of their favorites along the way. Diggnation also puts out a video version of the podcast which is hilarious. Watching Kevin and Alex again is really cool.

Apple is getting on the podcast bandwagon with the new version of iTunes. They now have podcasting service built right into the music store. Its really easy to use, and its free. iPodderX still reigns supreme on the Mac, but for everyone else, go get iTunes.

With the fall of TechTV its been hard to find good tech video programs, but now the internet tech shows are becoming alot better. I like Systm, theBroken, and FTS (From the Shadows)
Systm and theBroken are put out by Kevin Rose and Dan Huard. Now that they are working on the shows full time there starting to get better. FTS is another great tech show that Yoshi has been working really hard with.

In February Microsoft published an article to parents on how to interpret "leetspeak" so that parents could understand what their kids were saying. The article is off the wall funny. Microsoft seems so serious in its presentation of the facts. Below are some excerpts from the article. The full article can be found here.

1. While it has many nicknames, information-age slang is commonly referred to as leetspeek, or leet for short. Leet (a vernacular form of "elite") is a specific type of computer slang where a user replaces regular letters with other keyboard characters to form words phonetically—creating the digital equivalent of Pig Latin with a twist of hieroglyphics.

2. Rules of grammar are rarely obeyed. Some leetspeekers will capitalize every letter except for vowels (LiKe THiS) and otherwise reject conventional English style and grammar, or drop vowels from words (such as converting very to "vry").

3. Non-alphanumeric characters may be combined to form letters. For example, using slashes to create "/\/\" can substitute for the letter M, and two pipes combined with a hyphen to form "|-|" is often used in place of the letter H. Thus, the word ham could be written as "|-|4/\/\."

4. The suffix "0rz" is often appended to words for emphasis or to make them plural. For example, "h4xx0rz," "sk1llz0rz," and "pwnz0rz," are plural or emphasized versions (or both) of hacks, skills, and owns.

Leet words of concern or indicating possible illegal activity:

•	"warez" or "w4r3z": Illegally copied software available for download.
•	"h4x": Read as "hacks," or what a malicious computer hacker does.
•	"pr0n": An anagram of "porn," possibly indicating the use of pornography.
•	"sploitz" (short for exploits): Vulnerabilities in computer software used by hackers.
•	"pwn": A typo-deliberate version of own, a slang term often used to express superiority over others that can be used maliciously, depending on the situation. This could also be spelled "0\/\/n3d" or "pwn3d," among other variations. Online video game bullies or "griefers" often use this term.

Other common leet words:

•	"kewl": A common derivation of "cool."
•	"m4d sk1llz" or "mad skills": Refers to one's own talent. "m4d" itself is often used for emphasis.
•	"n00b," "noob," "newbie," or "newb": Combinations synonymous with new user. Some leetspeekers view "n00b" as an insult and "newbie" as an affectionate term for new users.
•	"w00t" or the smiley character \o/: An acronym that usually means "We Own the Other Team," used to celebrate victory in a video game.
•	"roxx0rs" Used in place of "rocks," typically to describe something impressive.
•	"d00d": Replaces the greeting or addressing someone as a "dude."
•	"joo" and "u": Used instead of "you." This is also commonly written as "j00" or "_\|00."
•	"ph": often replaces "f," as in "phear" for "fear" (as in "ph34r my l33t skillz") and vice versa, such as spelling "phonetic" as "f0\|\\|371(." Well, thank you Microsoft on that fine lesson in leetspeak. cough +MacMan

Systm Widget

Hi All! I just got through making a widget that counts down the days, hours, minutes, and seconds until the release of Systm. This is a Konfabulator only widget.

*Note: The image below will not update as it is a screenshot. The real widget updates every second.

What is a widget? Its a small program usualy written in HTML and Javascript that is designed to do a simple task such as display the weather, a calender, to-do lists, clocks, etc. In order to work they need to be run in a program like Konfabulator or Dashboard.

ou'll need to download Konfabulator to run it. I'm going to make a Dashboard version soon for all you Tiger users out there.

Scopetech just posted about the release date of Systm. It'c comming out 5/23/05 at 8PM PST. If you sign up for the newsletter you can download it 1 hour earlier. Systm is going to be similar to theBroken, but more like the old The Screen Savers. I can't wait!

Also in the way of TSS, Kevin Rose, and online technology content, This Week in Tech is a new PodCast put out by all the old TechTV guys.

Leo, Kevin, Pat, Yoshi, Robert, and Dvorak are all onboard on the project. The just released episode 5 today. TWIT was #1 on PodCast Alley this week, so check it out.

If you remember, a little over a month ago I made a post about Yahgoohoogle and SearchThe4 as alternatives to the standard Google search. We'll, its been brought to my attention that SearchThe4 is dead. But, with its passing comes another site almost identical to it, only better.

Rjnsmith Search is a search engine that is basically SearchThe4 but with more options of search engines to use. The user has the option to use these search engines for general web searches.

Now you can add audio posts to your Blogger blog FREE. Just sign up for AudioBlogger and follow the steps. Its so easy. Now, even if you don't have access to a computer or internet, you can call from any phone and leave an audio post. It's kinda like leaving a message on a answering machine. Sweet! It feels a little awkward at 1st, but after a while it won't be so bad. Check out my 1st audio post.

Now, even when I go out of town I'll be able to keep my blog up to date. This is going to be cool.

Well, how did you get here? I know, do you? HaHa, I'm just playing around. You may have noticed the new feature in the left column of the site. I put a line of javascript in my code and it automaticaly links to the site that you were refered from. Cool huh. If you want to put this on your own site just use this code.

You must remove the space between the "< script" at the start of the code, and remove the space between the "< /script" at the end of the code.

Ever wonder how people get the song they are currently listening to to show up on their blog? Well, chances are they are using one of these iTunes plug-ins.

1. Now Playing (Windows)
2. Now Playing (Mac)
3. Kung-Tunes (Mac)

I think that all of the plug-ins work, however, I think that the order I have them in is the order of best to worst (I am just guessing because I haven't tested any of them)

These plug-ins upload a file to a server that contains the current song/artist/etc. I would use one of these plug-ins, but since I'm using Blogger's servers I can't ftp the file to the server. If you are hosting your blog somewhere that lets you use ftp these plug-ins should work for you.

Yahoo! 360 Invitations

In case you haven't heard, Yahoo! has added a new feature. It's called Yahoo! 360. What is Yahoo! 360? Its a service that allows the user to post pics, make a blog, and connect to friends. I just started the service so I'm not sure how I'll end up liking it, but at least for now its fun to play with. Yahoo! 360 is in beta(testing) right now, so you have to be invited to join. I happen to have about 100 invites to give away. If you want to try out Yahoo! 360 and need an invite post a comment or email me.

Invites will go on a first come first serve basis. (Unless I'm bribed...) This things are like Gmail invites used to be. Get one while they last.

I just got through making a custom button for MacSpot. Making a custom button for a website or blog is easy with the 80x15 Brilliant Button Maker. Just pick a few colors, text, and pictures and there you go, you have a custom button. It only took me about 5 min to make this one

Yagoohoogle

Now you can search Yahoo and Google all from one page using Yagoohoogle. It will give you a "split-screen" view of the searches, great for comparing search engines. Now, you might say "I use Dogpile. Doesn't this do the same thing?" No, Dogpile lumps in a bunch of other search engines that don't really give you any thing you need. You end up wasting time looking at stuff you don't need. All you need is Google and Yahoo (in that order) and now with Yagoohoogle you can have them.

UPDATE: Another search engine I really like is SearchThe4. It not only searches Google and Yahoo, but also MSN and AskJeeves. I love the fact that when you scroll one of the "split screen" windows it scrolls the other 4. Its much easier to keep track of where you are on the page.

My only complaints are that when you click a link it opens in the tiny little window, not full screen. As long as you can right click and open in a new tab/window, this may be the search engine for you, especially if you are doing research or need a ton of relevant results fast.

Sorry I havent posted in a while. Macworld was a big deal this year with the introduction of the MacMini and the iPod Shuffle. If you havent heard of either product i pity you. READ MORE. So, that being said Im not going to do an aritlce on them. You can however check out apple or another mac news site to get the details.

Update: GrooveHouse, using a KVM is the way to go. I think that was Apple's plan when they included no monitor, mouse, or keyboard. Make sure the mouse/keyboard is USB and you'll be fine.

Sub $500 Mac

Wow, I hope this is true. Apple might be releasing a very cheap mac at the upcoming expo.

This would appeal to PC users who want to have a mac but dont want to spend a lot of money. It wont come with a display, but will be able to be hooked up to a monitor.

The new Mac is expected to have a Combo drive only, but will possibly have an upgrade path to a SuperDrive at a higher price. It is unclear how big the hard drive capacity will be, although sources indicate it will be between 40GB and 80GB.

Other expected features of the iMac include:

* 256MB of RAM
* USB 2.0
* FireWire 400
* 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet
* 56K V.92 modem
* AirPort Extreme support

This is only a rumor, but wouldnt it be nice to have a bunch more mac users out there

What would you say to a flash-based iPod with no screen and only a 256mb - 1gb storage capacity...? At first you may say this has nothing on the iPod or even the iPod mini. Well, you're wrong. Its got a GREAT price at about $100. I want to make known that this iPod is not out yet, but it could be seen in the near future.

This is a brand new site released by one of Kevin Rose's friends. Its pretty interesting. Be sure to check the FAQ. The way the site works is users submit stories. Other users "dig" through these links and "dig up" what they like. The links that get dug uo the most get shown on the main page. Its a great community to find all sorts of cool stuff on the web.

Fark is another user submitted news site, but digg has more tech news and is therefore better.

iPod Photo

In case you haven't heard yet, Apple released the iPod Photo today. Its an iPod that has a nice color screen and it allows you to view pictures, album art, and watch slideshows. Its pretty cool. Also you can watch the pics on a TV using video out. This new iPod comes in 40GB and 60GB the prices are $499 and &599.

Also be sure to check out the special edition U2 iPod.

If you like the different colors of the U2 iPod check out colorware. They will paint your current iPod or iBook almost any color you want.

If you like to IM and you hate having to log in to each service individually, or you dont like having so many different programs running at the same time. Trillian is a 3rd party IM client that allows you to log into AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN, and YAHOO Messenger, at the SAME time. It logs you into each service useing one program. The interface is the same for each client you are useing. I reccomend Trillian as an alternative to haveing to keep up with all your IM clients at the same time.

Sorry for the lack of post recently. My schedule has been pretty busy. I've decided to do a couple Mac posts shortly. I've been doing a lot of PC, Gmail, and General tech stuff and believe its time to get to the good stuff.

I finially got iLife '04 on Thursday. GarageBand is AWSOME!!! I haven't even played with iMovie or iPhoto yet. iTunes 4 has been out as a download for a while so it was nothing new.

I am a GarageBand fanatic. It's so fun to create your own songs with minimal effort. The hardest part is having to deal with an older mac (eMac 700Mhz, 256mb ram) However, it does get the job done. I'm supprised it working as well as it is. I expected it to crash all the time and bog down too. This hasn't been the case, yet.

If you don't know what GarageBand is, it is a loop/MIDE editor. It comes loaded with a ton of loops and sounds. Apples developers have made it super easy for anyone to put together a little song. The loops fit together very nicely.

GarageBand can also be used to record backup tracks for your original song. You can record your guitar and voice into GarageBand, then add drums, bass, and extras. You can even sing a harmony to yourself.

I have been making a bunch of songs over the past two days. Here are some of the songs I've composed. Feel free to download them and do whatever you want to them. Also if you don't mind, give me some feedback on how you liked them. Just leave it in the comments.

If you haven't already picked up GarageBand, and you have a Mac, don't wait any longer. The whole iLife '04 package which includes iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and GarageBand. All of this only costs $50. In my view each program seperately cold sell for $50. iLife is a steal!

Windows XP SP2

I've done it. I finially decided to update my PC with SP2. I was holding off for a while because I wanted to see if it was going to cause a lot of problems. So far I have had good luck.

Service Pack 2 does have some needed improvements. It has many more security features than SP1. We'll just have to wait and see if Microsoft fixed any of the security flaws or just make more :-)

If you have been holding off downloading SP2 I think its safe now. Just make sure to do the following things to help the process not screw up your computer as easily.

1. If your installiation of XP is pretty old (time its been on HD > 1.5 or 2 years) I reccomend doing a clean install of XP, THEN installing SP2

2. Make a backup of all your important data just in case.

3.PRAY!

Not all programs will work with SP2. Here is a list from Microsoft. I think this only affects server programs, but I'm not sure.

OK, I hope this helps. You can either download SP2 or get a FREE installation CD from Microsoft.

The new iMac G5

Well, its here. The iMac G5. Apple has done it again. This iMac looks as good, or even better than the G4 model. It has great specs for an even better price than the G4 version. Apple is now giving us more computer for the money. If you haven't already watched the Paris Expo Webcast I recommend you do. If you only want to see the stuff about the iMac skip to the end of the video clip.

The iMac will sport a 1.6 or a 1.8 G5 chip. It will also come in a 17'' or 20" model. This is a great looking computer for a great price.

Because I don' t want this post to go completly tech free get this. I just bought a new Sandisk Cruzer Mini 256mb for $35 (After $10 mail-in rebate and some instant savings) at CompUSA. I love it. ConMan has had one for a while and he loves his too. It is very handy and also looks a lot better than most of the other thumbdrives on the market. If you need or want a thumbdrive check out this one.

Also check out the new FireFox link on the side. If you don't already run FireFox or another form of Mozilla I strongly encourage you to switch. Why not, its free?

Doom 3

Doom 3 officially came out Aug. 4 for the PC and I of course rushed off to Best Buy after work to try and buy a copy. I was successful but it wasn't until today that I got a chance to play. The visuals in this game are amazing, easy the best I've seen. The music is awesome as well. Seems there are fewer weapons compared to games like UT 2k4 and I was alittle disappointed in the few types of multiplayer games (no CTF). I thought about what game to compare it to, to help describe it to a friend but I couldn't. It really isn't like CounterStrike, UT, FarCry, or Halo. It is an awesome game but so far (I am still in the beginning) it is pretty much going down one-way corridors and shooting stuff. I don't feel the skill demands compared to some of the above listed games. But still a great game, I suggest everyone buying it to try or playing on a friends or something. I paid $55 for mine, which is alittle high, so I suggest if you don't want to pay this just wait for it to go down.

On a more mac note, Doom 3 is being developed or converted for both the Mac and Linux but I haven't heard anything about when. Id Software seems to want to do a good job so isn't rushing this. It should also be out or coming out for the Xbox, I think.

Peasant's Quest

WOW!!! I just finished playing a really fun game called Peasant's Quest. This game is great because it is not your average run-of-the-mill game. It is text-based with a graphical interface. To play the game you use commands such as get, ask, talk, use, and give. The object of the game is to kill Trogdor the dragon because he has burninated your cottage.

The game was made by Videletrix for HomeStarRunner. Homestar is a flash animation site. It is my favorite! The best part of the site are the Strong Bad Emails.(Strong Bad is a character on the site). Be sure to watch some emails before you play the game. This will give you a taste of what the site is like so you will enjoy the game that much more.

BE SURE TO WATCH THE EMAIL CALLED DRAGON! IT WILL MAKE THE GAME MAKE MORE SENSE!

Have fun playing this throw back game. Remember things aren't always as they appear. If you need help with the game or just have a general question leave a comment and I'll help you.

iPod Linux

Have you ever wondered if you could acutally run an OS from your iPod hard drive. Well, now you can.

Linux for the iPod is a very cool thing. One of its purposes is to allow the iPod to play a variety of other music formats such as Ogg Vorbis.

You might ask

What applications can it run?

In theory most applications that run on uClinux can run on the iPod however there are important limitations;

The iPod does not have a FPU (floating point unit) so things like mpg123 won't run too nicely. Integer based versions of MP3 players however are available and will run.

The frame buffer does not support mmap() so X11 would not run.

Since we are running on uClinux the fork() system call is not supported (vfork() however is available).

A few good things about Linux on the iPod is that you will not lose any data on the iPod should you choose to install Linux. Also it has a built in boot loader which will allow you to choose between Linux and Apple's Firmware after you reset the iPod.

You should be able to run this on all iPods except the mini and G4. (This may only be temporary.)

Be sure to read the FAQ to get general knowledge and help.

In reality Linux on your iPod doesn't improve its functionality too much, but it sure is cool...

This site is GREAT! I've found some super deals on here.

Ben's Bargain Center does not make the deals, they just search the web and post the best from other companies.

One of my favorite parts of the site is the freebies section. In this section there are all sorts of deals and products that you can get for free. You can get free shirts and magazines. Sometimes a really good one will come along like this.

Deals like the one above are taken quickly so you have to be on your toes to get them.

Spyware

Many people that I know always complain to me that they recieve a ton of pop-ups and their computer is painfully slow. Most of the time I diagnose the problem as some sort of spyware or malware has been installed on the computer. Some very common and nasty spyware programs are Gator, Weather Bug, and Bonzi Buddy.

The steps to remove spyware are very easy. First you need to download some free utilities. Many companies will try to sell you software to remove spyware. Don't buy them. The programs below work a lot better and are FREE.

Spybot Search & Destroy
This is a Great Program. When you first start it up be sure to check for updates and imunize your system.

AdAware
This program is also good. Make sure to check for updates.

Another problem that people have is browser hijacks. If you have ever had you homepage changed without you changing it yourself, you have probably been hijacked. To remove these hijacks use the program CW Shredder.

CW Shredder
This program runs very fast so run it often!

This should pretty much clean up your system. Hopefully you will notice a speed improvment. If not at least you will know you are not being tracked all over the internet. Be sure to run these programs OFTEN to keep your system clean. Every time you run them you should check for updates. This is similar to checking the DAT files for an anti-virus.

Apple has done it. As rummored they have released the new 4G iPods. They look similar to the iPod minis but have the storage capacity and overall size as the 3g iPods. If you already own a 3G iPod dont run out and buy one of these. Your iPod is basically the same. However, if you are running an older iPod or are new to the iPod community, you should definately take a look at the 4G models. The price per GB is now lowered:

20GB costs $299
$14.95 per GB

40GB costs $399
$9.975 per GB

This is a great deal compared to the 3G iPods.

I'm looking to get a new graphics card for my PC. Ive been looking at the Radeon 9600 and 9800 pro and XT. Any suggestions? I'm looking at $200 max
